Aretha Franklin was ill for several years and was receiving hospice care before her passing last week; however, she must not have thought the end was coming. Or, writing a will simply wasn't high on her list of priorities. Either way, TMZ has reported that the Queen of Soul died "intestate" — without a will.
The shocking news means her four sons — Clarence, 63, Edward, 60, Teddy, 54, and Kecalf, 48 — will divide her assets, which are estimated to be around $80 million.
Aretha passed away in her hometown of Detroit on August 16, surrounded by friends and family. She was 76 years old. The soul icon's funeral, which will be restricted to friends and family only, is scheduled to take place in Detroit on August 31. Before the service, a public, two-day open casket viewing is set to take place at the city’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
Since her passing, artists ranging from Ariana Grande to Gene Simmons have paid tribute to the legendary singer — and Madonna honored her at this year's VMAs. Aretha lived an historic life and was influential to artists in all genres of music. Take a look at our favorite "Natural Woman" covers here and learn more about the Queen of Soul here.
